Ah! I mention Contrology in Pilates classes - but what does it mean?


Contrology is one of the principles of Pilates - the mind must consciously control the body. Contrology is about purposeful, intelligent movement that develops the body evenly and restores natural, efficient patterns of motion.


Every movement is performed slowly, with full attention, precision, and intention. Joseph Pilates believed that many physical problems stem from poor posture, shallow breathing, and habitual, unconscious movement. The concept of Contrology was created to address these issues, encouraging the body to move with strength, grace, and ease.

Breathing is fundamental to Contrology and not used as an after-thought.  Proper breathing enhances concentration and helps maintain control throughout each exercise.


In Pilates, I mention sometimes the “powerhouse” – this includes the deep abdominal muscles, lower back, hips, and glutes. All movements originate from this centre or core of the body, providing stability and efficiency. By initiating movement from the powerhouse, Contrology promotes spinal support, balanced strength, and improved posture in daily life.


Also, precision and quality are more important than quantity. In Contrology, fewer repetitions performed with precision and recruiting the right muscles, are considered far more effective than many repetitions done without focus.


Joseph Pilates described Contrology as a way to achieve “complete coordination of body, mind, and spirit.” Through consistent practice, Contrology aims to cultivate a strong, supple body, enhance body awareness, and harness a sense of vitality that extends beyond the practice into everyday life.
